Expression Theory of Art
Art is the artist's clarification and expression of their own emotion.
What it claims
The expression theory of art locates the essence of art in the expression of emotion. Collingwood strictly distinguishes expression from the craft of conveying an emotion one already knows. The artist begins from an oppressive feeling whose identity is still unknown; only in the process of making it into a work does the artist come to know what the emotion is.
